After receiving a video tape from San Diego State University on Breast Cancer for Deaf and Hard of Hearing women the Women's Health Day - What You Don't Know Can Hurt You was planned. So little information is available in sign that this special day espcially for those needing interpreting which would include health issues for women was held.
The day, supported in part through a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans included the signed video tape, a presentation on emotional and spiritual health, heart health, cervical cancer, and tips on healthy food preparation. The day also included a catered lunch that was both healthy
Thanks to the generosity of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church the women were able to meet in the comfortable school library and have their lunch in a nicely decorated school cafeteria. Volunteers from the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word helped the day run smoothly. Printed materials were provided by Whole Foods, Karmanos Cancer Center, and the Cancer Institute.
Our speakers were Pastor Ron Farah long time Lutheran Pastor and certified marriage and family counselor; Elizabeth Gray a certified exercise physiologist from Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michelle Graham, a social worker at Michigan School for the Deaf and volunteer with the Karmanos Cancer Center; and Donna Hollis from the Chef who was also the caterer of our luncheon. We were blessed to have 3 certified interpreters with us for the event. They did a great job at handling some very complex topics with specialized vocabulary.
The day included a wealth of information for those that attended on many health issues that are specific to women. We hope that this will be the beginning of many such events sponsored by the Society.
