RSS stands for "Really
Simple Syndication". You can think of it as "reverse email". It works by storing a file
on a website that your RSS reader fetches when you're ready to read it. So instead of
us sending out an email, your reader checks periodically (say, once a day) to see if
there are any new items. Anyone can subscribe to an RSS feed, and they can unsubscribe
just as easily. Of course, you can always check the
elms4deaf.org page to see if there are any updates.
Your RSS reader will tell you automatically whenever the website is updated. You can subscribe to several RSS feeds and check them all at the same time. There's not as much hassle as subscribing to an email list. Unlike email lists, the RSS-owner can't send you spam, and you can unsubscribe at any time. You can read more about RSS at Wikipedia.
First, you need to get an RSS reader. Some modern web-browsers have an RSS reader
built in. Firefox 2.0 or higher and Safari 2.0 or higher come with a simple RSS reader.
You can also install a more sophisticated RSS extension to your browser (for example,
NewsFox for Firefox). Some people
choose to download a free RSS program that runs separately from their web-browsers.
Macintosh users have an RSS reader built into the latest version of Mail.app. If
you have Firefox or Safari already installed, simply click the RSS button
(
)in the
address bar on the elms4deaf.org page. You can also
subscribe by clicking this link to the RSS
feed.
We recommend Google Reader, an easy-to-use, free, web-based RSS reader. You can create an account, then add this feed. On the left side of the Google Reader page, there is a button labled "Add subscription". Type in "elms4deaf.org/feeds/elms_news.xml" (without the quotes) and click "add". Whenever you go to Google Reader, you can see if Ephphatha has posted any news, along with any other feeds you choose to add.
If you use Windows, and you have Outlook installed you can choose to have a folder in your Outlook program for RSS. When you click on Subscribe, you may see a Window that gives you options. Choose the drop-down arrow and select Outlook.
In your Outlook program, a folder will be created, and the RSS feed will be sent there. Expand the RSS folder, and the RSS feed to which you subscribed will be listed with a blue number in parentheses indicating the number of unread articles.
On the Mac, when you click the subscribe link, you'll see this sheet:
Feeds will show up in the sidebar and look like this:
